Recaredo Turó d’en Mota 2004 has been selected as the Best Sparkling Wine by the Guia de Vins de Catalunya 2019 (2019 Guide to Catalan Wines) based on a blind tasting of over 1,403 wines made by 267 wineries around Catalonia. With a score of 9.82, Turó d’en Mota is the highest-rated sparkling wine in this year’s edition of the guide. This wine, which has emerged into the light after twelve years of ageing on the lees, is always produced in very limited quantities. In the case of the 2004 vintage, 2907 bottles were made.

In addition to being distinguished by the Guia de Vins de Catalunya, the excellence of this wine has been recognized by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and the Guía Peñín, which awarded Turó d’en Mota 2004 scores of 96+ and 97 points, respectively, in their latest ratings. Luis Gutiérrez (taster for the Wine Advocate) described the 2004 vintage as “subtle, elegant, complex and very well integrated” and says it’s one of the best vintages of this long-aged brut nature sparkling wine.

Turó d’en Mota, a terroir sparkling wine

Turó d’en Mota represents Recaredo’s philosophy taken to the extreme: a single vintage, a single variety (100% Xarel·lo), and a single vineyard worked in accordance with an approach that stresses observation over intervention. In the words of Ton Mata, a member of the third generation of the Recaredo family, the goal is for Turó d’en Mota to represent this little spot in the Penedès region in the “most transparent” way possible.

The Turó d’en Mota project was launched in 1999, when Recaredo set itself the goal of creating a terroir wine that would express the calcareous soil and Mediterranean microclimate of the local area. Since then, twenty vintages have been produced from this extraordinary vineyard, only eight of which have emerged from the darkness of our cellars. In 2004, Turó d’en Mota, a bush-trained vineyard planted in 1940, produced a total of 4250 kg of grapes in an area of 0.97 hectares.

Turó d’en Mota was the first Penedès’ sparkling wine to proudly embody the distinctive character of its place of origin, the first single-variety Xarel·lo ever, and a pioneer in fully exploring the undiscovered possibilities of wine for laying down.
